Weather stations are super handy little contraptions. Unsurprisingly, they predict the weather in your neighbourhood quite accurately based on a number of factors. But when they stop working, like most electric devices, they can be a pain to troubleshoot. Luckily for you, we’ve got you covered.
This is one of those questions with a general answer and many highly specific answers based on the brand of your weather station. I’m going to provide you with general guidance and basic answers that I’ve found so you can hopefully solve the issue without further homework.
Most weather stations operate with a weekly report and reset from their local weather group. If your weather station is unable to receive this reset for whatever reason, it will likely beep. The other potential (and frustratingly simply) answer is that your weather station could simply need batteries. That’s right! Just like that obnoxious smoke alarm in your attic, your weather station will beep when on low power.
To solve both of these issues, simply perform a hard reset:
In short, your weather station beeps because it either hasn’t received a weekly reset, or it’s low on batteries. Let it reset and replace batteries as needed, and the issue should resolve itself.
Those familiar with weather stations will already know this name. For the uninitiated, Wunderground (Weather Underground) is a weather prediction website dedicated to ensuring everyone has access to vital weather information.
A number of users choose to route their weather station through Wunderground, as it’s generally quite accurate and just overall extremely useful. But if your weather station suddenly reads as “offline” on Wunderground (when it’s not), it’s frustrating! Let’s get that fixed, shall we?
Here’s what to do:
In short, if your weather station reads as offline, it’s likely an issue with the servers of either Wunderground or your service provider. Try resetting your login, creating a new password, and just good old fashioned waiting and the issue should resolve itself.
This issue goes along the same lines as the previous issue – power supply. If your weather station screen has gone black, either following a reset or just seemingly at random, you need to look at the batteries or outlet.
If your weather station is corded, you need to inspect the cable. Ensure it’s properly connected, not damaged, and that it’s in a properly powered outlet. In other words, make sure everything is working and inspect the voltage of your weather station. If it’s pulling too much power, consider moving it to another circuit.
If your weather station has batteries, the answer is even more simple – replace the batteries. Should the screen remains black, contact the manufacturer for a replacement or further guidance.
Something that many don’t consider is that the weather can and will affect your weather station. If you find that it’s working slowly or sluggishly, or that the station isn’t responding, move it to a more temperate part of the house!
Cold weather and humidity can cause weather stations to lag – after all, electronics really aren’t supposed to be in near-freezing temperatures or submerged in liquid. Try moving your weather station to a more consistently-comfortable room and you should find this issue is resolved.
If your weather station is acting up, this article should have resolved your issue. The most common cause of most issues for weather stations relate to power, temperature, and reception for servers. So start by checking the cord/batteries of your device, then see if the weather station is in a super cold or humid room. Following that, it’s time to inspect the servers’ health – at times, the issues you experience aren’t on your end, but on the provider’s end.
All in all, troubleshooting a weather station shouldn’t be too hard – it just takes a bit of know-how and a few minutes.
