Toothpaste is both my best friend and my arch-nemesis. If you're anything like me, you're clumsy as all hell in the mornings before coffee, and toothpaste tends to find its way onto your clothes. Luckily, it's actually a surprisingly easy fix! Whether you need to get it out of clothes, upholstery, carpet, or just about anything else, Fraffles will have it up and clean in no time.

To get toothpaste out of clothes, upholstery, or carpet, use a butter knife to scrape it up and then rinse with water.

Now, this is a rather easy fix, but we'll break it down quickly for you to ensure it's fully out. Let's get into it!

One important thing to note is that many kinds of toothpaste nowadays (especially green/eco-friendly ones) use titanium dioxide powder. That simply will not come out without detergent. But, it won't hurt to try and pray that your toothpaste doesn't have that pesky powder.

Here's how to remove toothpaste stains from your favourite tie:

  1. Scrape off as much as you can with a butter knife or spoon (something that won't damage the clothing or rub it farther into the fibres).
  2. Blot don't scrub the stain with a wet cloth. Scrubbing will push the stain further in, setting it and making it harder to remove.
  3. Mix a couple of drops of your favourite laundry detergent with ~500mL of water. - Do not put detergent straight onto the stain. Dyed detergent can leave stains if you put it directly onto the clothing, and placing any detergent on the stain without water will make it much harder to get the soap out.
  4. Soak your cloth in the soapy water and gently blot the stain. Again, try not to scrub - if you do, do it gently.
  5. Once the detergent hits the stain, it should lift up rather easily. Simply blot and rinse the spot with water.
  6. If the stain is being pesky, hit it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and more of your water/detergent mix. Repeat steps 2-5, using the toothbrush as needed.
  7. Air dry your clothing.

How to Get Toothpaste Out of Furniture or Carpet

This is pretty much the same process, but it varies ever so slightly. To get toothpaste stains out of carpet or furniture:

  1. Dip a clean white cloth into the same mixture as above. Using nonwhite cloths runs the risk of their dye bleeding onto your upholstery, especially if you're using hot or warm water.
  2. Dab the stain, lifting up at the end. Your goal here is to "scoop" (for lack of a better word) the stain off the upholstery.
  3. Repeat (also using a toothbrush if needed) until the stain lifts.
  4. Blot with a most cloth to remove leftover detergent.
  5. Blot again to dry.

If you do accidentally end up staining your carpet or furniture, try 3% hydrogen peroxide after testing it on an inconspicuous part first. Rinse the area afterwards with cold water, blotting to dry. This should remove any residual stain, though it may bleach the area you apply it to, hence the test first. Always, always test any cleaner you plan to use on carpet or upholstery before jumping in. You don't want a weird extra-white spot on your eggshell couch.

Final Thoughts

Toothpaste stains always seem to hit at the worst times. That means that for the most part, you won't have the time to throw the clothing in question into the wash. Luckily, it is possible to remove toothpaste stains from just about anything. Assuming it doesn't have titanium dioxide in it, toothpaste is generally water-soluble, meaning rinsing with water will usually do the trick.

If not, using a little bit of detergent and hydrogen peroxide will get toothpaste stains out of carpet, clothing, and upholstery in as little as fifteen minutes. And as always, try to treat the stain early. The longer you wait, the harder to remove it'll be.
