To many, a washing machine is an essential appliance. For this reason, we understand how frustrating it can be when the drum fails. Our article moves at a quick pace, providing solutions to each of the problems on our list.

Just a footnote. If you are having trouble with your dryer instead, then rather visit our pages that deal with issues related to a Hotpoint Washer Drier or Hotpoint Aquarius Washer Dryer.

1 - Lid Switch Assembly Failure

A Hotpoint washing machine cannot spin if the lid is not properly sealed. More specifically, if the lid switch assembly fails, the drum won't activate.

Solution:

To find out if this is the problem, you can use a multimeter to test the lid for continuity. If the lid fails the test it has to be replaced.

2 - The Drive Belt is Broken

Person

The drive belt sits between the motor pulley and the drive pulley. It connects the motor to the drive system and the tub can only spin if the belt is in good condition.

Solution:

Inspect the drive belt to determine whether it is broken. If it's broken or hangs loosely on the pulleys, the belt needs to be replaced as well.

3 - Defective Motor Control Board

The motor control board of a Hotpoint washing machine provides power to the motor. If the motor control board is defective, the washer will struggle to work or fail altogether.

Solution:

Check the control board for burnt components. If you find that the control board has power, but cannot power the motor, it has to be replaced.

4 - The Motor Coupling Has Failed

The motor coupling connects the motor to the washing machine transmission. More often than not, the motor coupling fails when the washer is overloaded with laundry. This is actually a failsafe mechanism to protect the motor and the transmission from damage.

Solution:

Inspect the motor coupling for wear and tear. If you find that a broken coupling, replacing it will have your washing machine up and running in no time.

5 - Damaged Door Lock Motor and Switch Assembly

The door latch of a washing machine secures the door during the operation. The washer can only activate if the door is properly closed otherwise there will be water everywhere! Naturally, most washing machines are designed not to spin when the door is still unsealed or the latch is defective.

Solution:

Inspect the door latch for damage. If you discover a mechanical issue, it needs to be replaced but if the problem is electrical and you have a good grasp on wiring, you can consult the washer's wiring diagram to correct the defect. If a multimeter shows that the switches on the door lack continuity, you should replace the switch.

6 - The Clutch Has Worn Out

The clutch makes the connection between the transmission and the inner tub. It helps the tub to gradually increase the spinning speed. If defective, the drum's spinning will definitely not work as it normally should.

Solution:

Unfortunately, no DIY fix can solve this issue at home. If this is indeed your problem, the clutch needs to be replaced.

7 - The Drive Pulley Is Damaged

The drive pulley is connected to the washer drum and works with the drive belt and motor. If the drive pulley gets worn out, it may cause the drive belt to slip off and prevent the washer from spinning.

Solution:

Remove the drive pulley and check for any signs of damage or defects. If you find any faults, the best course of action is to replace the drive pulley.

8 - Damaged Rotor Assembly Magnets

The rotor of a washing machine creates a strong electromagnetic field. This helps the tub to rotate either clockwise or counterclockwise. Sometimes, something will damage the rotor's magnets or one of its other parts. As a result, the washer stops spinning.

Solution:

Check the rotor for damage. When you find a defective part or magnet, replace the part.

9 - Defective Stator

The stator is an important part. Without it, the rotor cannot create a magnetic field. This magnetism spins the tub.

Solution:

To figure out if your Hotpoint washing machine stopped spinning because of the stator, you should closely inspect it for damage to the winding. If you discover any, replace the stator to fix your washing machine.

10 - Defective Bearing

Person

Your Hotpoint washing machine may also not be spinning because of a defect in the bearing. You can find this part in the middle of the outer tub. When defective, this bearing prevents a tub from spinning smoothly.

Solution:

There is some bad news here. Very often, a machine will only work again when you replace both the washer and the outer tub.

11 - Faulty Rear Drum (with Bearing)

The rear drum of a washing machine consists of a bearing or multiple bearings. It keeps the inner tub spinning smoothly. Your machine will be noisy or stop spinning when the rear drum fails.

Solution:

You can easily replace the bearing. Some machines only work when you replace the outer drum as well. Most manufacturers provide both parts together because fixing the bearing separately is a very difficult task.

12 - Defective Tub Seal and Bearing Kit

The tub bearing keeps the inner tub spinning as it should. If the tub bearing becomes defective, it can cause the washer to lock up and stop working. It can also cause the washer to make a loud and annoying rumbling noise.

Solution:

The solution is to replace the tub bearing and the outer tub.

13 - Damaged Basket Drive or Spin Tube

The basket drive sits on top of the transmission and engages with the inner tub. Sometimes, the spin tube in this assembly strips and cause the washer to spin slowly or not at all.

Solution:

Inspect both the spin tube tabs and the drive block of the machine. If the spin tube tabs are fine, the basket's clutch pads are likely the issue. Replace any worn parts.

14 - The Drive Motor is Defective

Another reason your Hotpoint washing machine might not be spinning properly is a defective drive motor. However, the cause of this issue is usually not the drive motor itself.

Solution:

Before going the expensive route and replacing the drive motor, check the machine's other parts that are more commonly defective. The motor can be replaced when all of these components are in good working order.

15 - Damaged Washer Transmission

Your washing machine's washer transmission needs to be in top shape. When worn, the gears fail to work and the drum cannot spin.

Solution:

A damaged washer transmission is very rare. Always check every other part that could be responsible for the faulty drum before you decide to replace this entire section of your washer.

16 - Defective Door Lock

Any defect or damage to your Hotpoint's door lock will interfere with proper spinning.

Closely inspect the door strike for any signs of damage. If you find any defects, the door strike needs to be replaced.

Fix It Or Chuck It?

In some cases, the fix is quick and inexpensive but sometimes, the price tag means that you can just as well purchase a brand new washing machine. What you ultimately decide in such a situation is up to you. The important part is never to hesitate to call a professional (with great references) or to go to the top brands to replace your old washer with an upper-tier machine.
